Friedrich Merz, CDU, announced that relief measures are coming to help with fuel prices. Speaking at an event hosted by the BGA trade association on Tuesday, Merz stated that action must be taken. He confirmed that he has been discussing this issue directly with several state premiers and chancelleries.
Prior to Merz’s comments, Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) had already announced measures intended to provide relief. However, speaking to the broadcasters RTL and ntv, Reiche cautioned against bringing back the fuel subsidy (Tankrabatt), instead proposing direct payments aimed at low-income earners. Data indicates that high-earning individuals were the primary beneficiaries of the previous fuel discount. Separately, the local CDU and SPD groups in Brandenburg have recently been pushing for a suspension of the CO2 price.
