Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi held a meeting in Berlin on Tuesday, discussing the situation in the Middle East and opportunities for economic cooperation.
Merz was firm regarding Iran, stating that the country must “finally end its blockades.” He stressed the urgent need for Iran to halt its military nuclear program and cease supporting proxy forces throughout the region.
Al-Zaidi responded to the regional difficulties, noting that some countries are being affected more severely than those designated as rivals. He specifically highlighted that Iraq is deeply impacted by its inability to export its petroleum and oil products. In response, the Prime Minister indicated plans to boost oil exports toward Syria and through the Mediterranean Sea.
The two government leaders ultimately agreed to pursue closer economic collaboration. Merz commented on recovery, asserting that those who fled conflict or extremism would return more rapidly if the region experienced growth, new job opportunities, and overall prosperity. He added that the terror state of ISIS is a thing of the past, noting that Iraq has stabilized impressively despite substantial ongoing challenges.
Al-Zaidi praised the relationship between Iraq and Germany, describing it as founded upon “the shared belief that building is always stronger than destroying.”
