Georg Eisenreich, the Minister of Justice for Bavaria (CSU), has announced his resignation, stating that he will step down at the end of September. In a personal statement, the minister explained that he never truly intended to dedicate his entire life to politics, and he wishes to return to practicing as a lawyer in the future. Eisenreich also announced next summer that he will step down as the District Chairman of the Munich CSU; however, he intends to remain a state parliament member until the end of the current legislative term.
Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria (CSU), expressed regret over his minister’s decision but also showed understanding. Söder commented that “Georg Eisenreich has made a deliberately private decision, which I deeply regret. It is a self-determined and personal decision for a new life path that deserves respect.”
Söder went on to acknowledge the significant contributions Eisenreich has made to the Free State. He noted that Eisenreich earned great credit during his tenure, first as State Secretary for Education, Culture, Science, and Art, then as State Minister for Europe, Digital, and Media, and most recently as the State Minister of Justice since 2018. Söder stated that in all his roles, Eisenreich has improved or secured the lives of people in Bavaria through “his competence and consistency,” always maintaining “his straightforward style.” The Minister-President concluded by announcing that the decision regarding his successor will be made during a closed-door meeting in Kloster Banz.
