OFI Crete secured a 2-0 victory over German Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim in the opening matchday of the Europa League League phase. Despite dominating possession throughout the game, the German contingent returned home without scoring a single point.
Although Hoffenheim held a higher volume of ball possession and found themselves in several promising attacking positions early on, they were unable to register a goal. Instead, OFI Crete exploited its first effective counter-attack. In the 30th minute, Aitor managed to score the first goal after the run-up provided by Kenan Kodro, with the strike later confirmed following a review by VAR.
Even after the break, Hoffenheim pressured relentlessly to find the equalizer, but their finishing remained imprecise. A notable chance arose in the 78th minute when Maximilian Lemperle failed to convert a delivery into the net. The decisive score arrived in the 84th minute: a corner from Borja Gonzalez found Giorgos Kanellopoulos, who headed the ball in to make it 2-0. Hoffenheim continued their aggressive attempt to stage a comeback, but the victory was already secured.
