A recent poll conducted by the opinion research institute Forsa reveals that a large majority of Germans consider voluntary commitment essential for the proper functioning of democracy. This finding was reported by the broadcasters RTL and ntv, who commissioned the study.
According to the survey, 87 percent of respondents rated the involvement of citizens-whether in associations, civic initiatives, trade unions, or political parties-as either very or rather important. Conversely, only ten percent assigned it little or no significance.
Self-reported figures show that 39 percent of those surveyed are involved in voluntary work regularly. There are minimal differences observed across age groups; 37 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds are involved regularly, compared to 41 percent of those over 60.
However, commitment in a strictly political sense is considerably lower. Only seven percent of the respondents stated that they are regularly active in an organization such as a political party, a civic initiative, or a trade union. This figure drops to just three percent among those aged 18 to 29.
