The DAX held steady in positive territory through midday on Monday, building on a generally favorable opening to the trading day. By approximately 12:30 PM, the leading index stood at roughly 25,580 points, marking a 1.1% increase from Friday’s closing level. The strongest performers included Infineon, DHL, and Symrise, while the lowest-ranking stocks were Vonovia, Volkswagen, and Fresenius.
Market analysts, such as Andreas Lipkow of CMC Markets, noted that the upcoming economic and price data once again came into sharp focus. Lipkow stated, “Central banks have made it clear that their future course will be significantly influenced by the development of inflation and the economy. They have put their cards on the table; now it is the job of the economic data.” Consequently, any major surprises concerning growth or inflation are likely to immediately trigger new interest rate speculation.
While the market also tracked the approaching meeting between the US and China, Lipkow added that preparatory discussions over the weekend had initially eased some geopolitical pressure. However, he cautioned that this development was not yet enough to drive a broad appetite for buying; investors were eager to see if the improved talking atmosphere would lead to tangible results.
The European community’s currency saw little change at lunchtime on Monday. The Euro was trading at 1.1480 US dollars, while the dollar equivalent was 0.8711 Euros. Meanwhile, the price of oil declined. Around noon Central European Time, a barrel of Brent crude, sourced from the North Sea, cost $101.40, representing a drop of 2.4% (244 cents) compared to the close of the previous trading session.
