On German Unity Day, the leader of the Green Party, Franziska Brantner, called for a general commitment to the national colors. Speaking to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, she stated there was no reason to leave “Black-Red-Gold to the loudest on the right.” Instead, she emphasized the importance of showing the colors “with confidence,” noting that the flag represents a Germany that is aware of its history, has learned from it, and is shaping its future in freedom.
Brantner highlighted that she intends to use the holiday as an opportunity to proudly pin the German flag on her lapel, together with the European flag. For her, Germany is home because it is a country that is reunited and firmly anchored in Europe.
The Green Party leader continued by saying that Germany is today a reunited and cosmopolitan nation in the heart of Europe. She added that even people who move to Germany should recognize a promise in the Black-Red-Gold flag: “This is a country where I can live freely and be who I am.”
