Greens Push Coalition to Target Russia’s Shadow Fleet Amid Drone Aid Support

The Green Party has welcomed the commitment made by Friedrich Merz (CDU) to supply interceptor drones to Ukraine, but they are simultaneously demanding that the coalition make greater efforts to cut off Russian funding.

Britta Haßelmann, chair of the Greens faction, told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that while securing the drones is a positive step, Ukraine urgently needs assistance to survive the impending winter. She stressed that the federal government must finally take decisive action against Russia’s shadow fleet, which President Putin uses to finance his war.

Haßelmann noted that Merz’s visit to Ukraine is an important signal, but she emphasized that signals alone are insufficient. What Ukraine requires now are firm promises and increased support to bring an end to the suffering of its people. She added that peace will only be achievable when Russia recognizes that it cannot achieve its military objectives, stating that Putin is the only person who can immediately halt the brutal attacks and bombings.
