Several SPD members of the Bundestag are demanding clear commitments from Die Linke in the ongoing exploratory talks in Berlin, while also supporting the continuation of the discussions. Ruppert Stüwe, an SPD member of the Bundestag, told the “Rheinische Post” that Berlin needs a government that maintains unambiguous positions on antisemitism and clan crime. He stated, “If Die Linke is ready to demonstrate this clarity, we should proceed with the exploratory talks.”
Stüwe further elaborated that the coalition for Berlin must address the housing crisis, offer a stable economic perspective, and strengthen the city’s social cohesion. He added that “the three parties can achieve this collectively, and this must now be the standard for further negotiations.”
Hakan Demir, another SPD member of the Bundestag representing Berlin, urged a measured approach toward Die Linke. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he noted, “Die Linke in Berlin is a progressive party within the democratic spectrum-though it does include some very problematic actors concerning antisemitism or the trivialization of terrorism.” Demir insisted that the party must be treated with sober neutrality, neither being demonized nor downplayed.
He affirmed that the current process, where fundamental values are discussed before policy matters, is entirely appropriate. “This is exactly how the SPD leadership in Berlin is operating,” he concluded, expressing his full support for this course.
