Justice Jurist Navi Pillay Wins Nobel Peace Prize for Championing Global Human Rights

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced in Oslo on Friday that the Nobel Peace Prize this year is being awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a former judge at the International Criminal Court. Pillay, who originates from South Africa, served as a judge in The Hague from 2003 to 2008 and remains designated as an ad hoc judge in the Gambia versus Myanmar case. Furthermore, she held the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Pillay has a distinguished legal career that dates back to 1967, when she made history during the apartheid era in the South African province of Natal by establishing her own law practice because she was barred from working in an existing firm due to her skin color. In the 1990s, she also served as a judge at the International Criminal Court for Rwanda. The Nobel Peace Prize comes with a grant equivalent to approximately one million euros. The award was previously given last year to Maria Corina Machado from Venezuela.
