Former Politician Michael Roth Calls for Respect and Retreat Amid Bas’s Resignation

Former SPD Member of Parliament Michael Roth expressed regret over the resignation of Federal Minister of Labor Bärbel Bas (SPD) and called for greater respect when interacting with politicians. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Monday, Roth stated that when someone is grieving a loved one and has withdrawn from political life, people should refrain from speculation about what that person is, or should be, doing, or should not be. He hopes Bas’s resignation will give everyone a moment to reflect.

Roth, who stepped away from professional politics after 27 years in the Bundestag, explained that the “hardness of the conflicts, the hatred, the anger” in the political environment, media, and society had become too much for him. He argued that when the sensitive, empathetic, and quiet members withdraw, leaving only the hardened, cynical individuals, it negatively impacts political decisions. The former SPD MP stressed that while political debates must be vigorous in substance, they must simultaneously be conducted with mutual respect and respect for individuals’ integrity.

He highlighted threats of violence as particularly serious, drawing on personal experience. Many victims eventually withdrew from public life to prevent further burdening their families. They often told authorities-whether they were mayors, district administrators, ministers, or MPs-that they would no longer endure such situations. Roth called this an irreplaceable loss. He believes that the increasing aggressiveness in politics is largely driven by populists and extremists, and this negativity bleeds into the political center and society. He emphasized that those who do not participate in the loud debates and enrich political discussions with nuance are desperately needed right now.
