Following Bärbel Bas’s resignation as the SPD’s party leader and Federal Labour Minister, her previous co-chair, Lars Klingbeil, has announced that the entire party leadership will undergo a new election. Klingbeil stated on Monday, after a meeting of the Social Democrats in Berlin, that the party convention would be held “around the turn of the year,” where the complete leadership team of the Social Democrats would stand for election. He emphasized the importance of this process, adding, “I think this is crucial so that we have clarity regarding the staffing and also clarity regarding the SPD’s programmatic course.”
When asked about his own future, Klingbeil did not provide immediate details. However, he reiterated his belief in maintaining the dual leadership structure of the SPD. “I introduced this dual leadership when I was General Secretary back then, and I still think it is right,” he said. He assured that he would now work to ensure that the SPD has “the best lineup” at the top.
