Julia Klöckner, the President of the German Bundestag and a member of the CDU, stated that the parliamentary body is facing increasing external dangers. She confirmed to Stern that the Bundestag currently maintains 200 of its own police officers, a presence she deemed necessary.
During access control checks, the officials discovered various prohibited items. These included pens with integrated knives, spray cans equipped with tasers, and handbags containing knuckle dusters. Furthermore, individuals who failed the reliability screening were denied entry. Klöckner stressed the need to strike a balance between maintaining an open house and ensuring vigilance, adding that she takes this issue very seriously.
The CDU politician declared her intent to enhance the security of the Bundestag. She argued that parliaments and democracies should not be naive but rather robustly defensible, asserting that consistent security measures build confidence in institutional structures. She noted that the Bundestag police ensure the application of the monopoly on force, preventing political factions from introducing their own private security services. “You cannot imagine the kind of ideas some people come up with,” Klöckner remarked.
