Microsoft President Brad Smith voiced serious concerns regarding uncontrolled artificial intelligence (AI), warning of potential grave security damage following numerous AI failures observed over the summer. Speaking to Handelsblatt, the executive urged heightened caution, stating, “Let’s wake up before something bad happens-or must a major accident occur first? We are likely to find the answer in 2027.”
Given the rising security risks, Smith is pressing for governmental intervention. He emphasized that governments must be empowered to act when regulatory bodies discover unsafe products. Furthermore, he believes it is a role of governments to adjust economic incentives, prompting companies to rethink their approaches while simultaneously protecting public safety.
Concurrently, Smith called for a slowdown in the development pace of AI models. He argued that “anyone who wants to win the long game must invest more in safety in the short term.” This includes accepting that sometimes, moving slower at the forefront is necessary to allow security measures time to catch up.
