The new subsidy program, “Commercial to Residential,” has been described as launching “very well” by Federal Minister of Building, Verena Hubertz (SPD). Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Hubertz noted that the program received over 700 applications in its first three months, accumulating a total application volume exceeding 120 million Euros, with approximately half of those applications already approved.
The Minister stated that the initiative demonstrates that housing solutions are possible without relying solely on new construction. She pointed out that almost 12 million square meters of commercial properties are currently vacant. By tackling this empty space, she added, the government can revitalize urban centers and create necessary housing in areas where buildings remain dark.
Looking ahead to the restructuring of the funding framework starting in 2027, Hubertz announced that while precise guidelines are yet to be confirmed, the ministry is scrutinizing options to increase both housing availability and home ownership. In the future, only two main pillars are expected: one dedicated to the renovation of existing buildings and another focused on new construction. Hubertz emphasized that a key priority within this shift will be fostering family homeownership, stating that acquiring one’s own home must become an attainable goal for the wider population.
