CDU Warns Against Left-Wing Coalition, Calling Proposed SPD Alliance “Ridiculous” and Undermining Principles

CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann issued a warning regarding the prospect of a coalition involving the Left Party (Linke), the SPD, and the Grünen in Berlin. Speaking to “Welt am Sonntag”, Hoppermann stated that such an alliance would pose a “heavy burden” on the federal coalition.

Hoppermann expressed deep skepticism about the potential competence of such a grouping. She argued that if parties required multiple meetings just to agree on the necessity of combating anti-Semitism, define it, and then develop mechanisms to fight it-only to then proudly proclaim this as a new realization-it would not demonstrate governmental capability, but rather be “ridiculous.” She further questioned how parties could seriously meet for shared remembrances, such as those held on January 27th, or what meaning the phrase “Never again” would retain.

The CDU politician affirmed that the internal agreement within her party concerning incompatibilities remained sound, regardless of whether the extremism stemmed from the left or the right. According to Hoppermann, any collaboration with extremists undermines the fundamental values of the party. She also emphasized the importance of showing the public why populist solutions fail to solve real problems. She stressed that while topics occupying the hearts of the populace are valid, they should not be dismissed simply because other parties elect to address them.
