BKA Sees Sharp Decline in Online Criminal Content Reports Amid Political Shifts

The Central Reporting Office for Criminal Content on the Internet (ZMI), which operates within the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), reported receiving a total of 4,962 submissions during the first half of 2026. These reports originated from government agencies, civil society organizations, and other collaborative partners. According to reporting by the “Welt,” the figures represent a significant and noteworthy decline compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. In the first half of 2025, the BKA had recorded 11,427 such reports.

This decrease is partly attributed to a political strategic shift in the state of Hesse. The nationwide reporting portal, “Hessen gegen Hetze,” has been reorganized into a service focusing specifically on advising people affected within Hesse. Hesse was previously a major contributor to the rising case numbers; in the first half of 2025 alone, nearly 6,500 of the 11,427 indicators processed went through the Hessian “Entry and Advisory Service for Hate and Harassment Online.”
