The German federal government is emphasizing that the new report from the UN Environment Programme will serve as a critical signal ahead of the upcoming World Climate Conference. The report warned that the world is currently tracking toward a 2.8-degree Celsius rise in global temperature by the end of this century.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Environment described the projected increase as “very dramatic,” stating that it sends a clear message ahead of the conference scheduled in Antalya. This urgency comes as COP31 is set to take place in Antalya, Turkey, from November 9th to 26th.
The UN Environment Programme released its annual report on Wednesday in preparation for the summit. The report clearly indicated that dramatic and immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are necessary if the goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C is to be achieved by the end of the century, noting that existing global political actions are insufficient.
Furthermore, Turkey’s presidency has proposed that there must be significantly greater global investment in electrification measures, a point deemed vital for achieving better emissions reductions.
