Prime Minister Calls for AI Revolution to Fortify Cybersecurity Against Growing Digital Threats

Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) has called for the increased utilization of Artificial Intelligence to close security loopholes in websites, stating that “we are at the beginning of a new era of cybersecurity.” Speaking to the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”, Wildberger noted that AI-based tools could help detect vulnerabilities faster and more accurately than ever before. The CDU politician emphasized that in the digital realm, speed is crucial for identifying and addressing security gaps in a timely manner.

Wildberger stressed that the federal government must invest strategically in digital sovereignty and build its own competencies, citing the new AI Security Institute in Berlin as an example. He asserted that by independently testing leading models and consistently deploying AI to protect Germany’s networks, the nation can successfully navigate the evolving cybersecurity landscape.

This focus comes against the backdrop of a severe vulnerability discovered in the PHP programming language, which is one of the most frequently used technologies for running websites and online services globally. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and international authorities issued warnings last week about this critical flaw, leading to the temporary shutdown of numerous websites, including those belonging to the federal government and administrative agencies.

Wildberger commented on the incident, stating that the federal government takes the warnings and the outbreak very seriously, noting that its cybersecurity agencies responded proactively, quickly, and clearly. He added that, as of now, there are no indications of a successful compromise of any systems belonging to the federal administration.

A spokesperson for the Digital Ministry maintained that the security warning issued on Wednesday remains valid. The spokesperson reiterated the BSI’s view that urgent action is required and urged all users of PHP to promptly install the provided patches.
