New Bundestag Tradition: Baby Reappears at Speaker’s Desk During Parliamentary Debate

A baby has once again appeared at the rostrum in the German Bundestag. On Thursday, during a debate concerning youth crime, the left-wing member of parliament Mareike Hermeier was seen wearing a baby carrier. While the child was well-wrapped and hardly visible or audible, it appeared to have fallen asleep during the speech. This is not the first time this has happened, as a little over a year ago, the Green party MP Hanna Steinmüller made history by delivering a speech in the plenary hall with a baby in a carrier. Previously, only exceptional permission was granted to bring infants into the chamber. However, the President of the Bundestag, Julia Klöckner (CDU), has since expressed openness to changing this established practice.
