A video circulating in Bremer security circles, and reportedly covered by Spiegel, is potentially causing friction for the red-green coalition ahead of German Unity Day. The footage shows two masked activists posing with a baseball bat at the Bremen Stadtmusikanten memorial, while another ignites a Molotov cocktail featuring a German flag. The video also features the defiant slogan, “Make October 3rd a disaster.” This year’s central celebration for German Unity took place in Bremen.
What makes the video particularly sensitive is the involvement of the individuals featured. One of the groups linked to the footage is the Interventionistische Linke (IL). This organization has been classified by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as “left-extremist” and “violence-oriented.” This involvement comes at a tense time, months of political dispute surrounding the relationship between the traditional Left party in Bremen and the IL. During a party convention, the Left expressed pride and happiness that Bremen possesses such a critical civil society, including the interventionist left.
The CDU faction leader, Wiebke Winter, criticized the city Senate for lacking clear boundaries against radical groups. She stated that it is intolerable how the Left is “cuddling” left-extremists. Similarly, SPD Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte is being pressed to clarify his stance. Against this, Nelson Janßen, head of the Left faction, dismissed the video as “crass scene-making,” arguing that the IL is not violent.
