Konrad Körner: Presidency Not for Political Deals, Declares CSU Stance on Presidential Race

CSU parliamentary group member Konrad Körner rejected the suggestion that the Christian Social Union (CSU) might offer political concessions in exchange for Ilse Aigner’s candidacy for the presidency. Speaking in the Politico Berlin Playbook podcast, Körner stated that the office of the federal president is not one where political bargaining takes place.

When questioned whether the CSU might become more flexible on issues like the maternal pension benefits in return for supporting a candidate, he asserted that he would neither hope nor expect that. However, he acknowledged that the current discussions reflect efforts to negotiate names and suggestions, but stressed that these should not lead to reciprocal political horse-trading. He added that this approach is appropriate for the office itself.

Regarding Aigner, Körner noted that her name has not lost appeal but has, in fact, gained popularity, describing this as a positive indicator for the CSU. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the Union ultimately needs to come forward with a unified proposal. He also listed Karin Prien, Julia Klöckner, and Ines Claus (all CDU members) as candidates who are also strong contenders.

As for whether an Aigner candidacy could block Markus Söder’s path to the presidency, Körner remained noncommittal. Commenting on potential discussions regarding a change of chancellors, he concluded by stating that Friedrich Merz is currently the Chancellor and this is expected to remain the status quo for some time.
