Widmann-Mauz Backs Ilse Aigner for German Presidency, Advocating for CDU-Backed Nomination

Annette Widmann-Mauz, the honorary chairwoman of the women’s union within the CDU, voiced her strong support for Ilse Aigner, the Bavarian State Parliament President (CSU), as a potential future Federal President. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, she stated that she would be very pleased if Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) nominated Ilse Aigner for the highest state office.

Widmann-Mauz highlighted that Aigner is well-liked and close to the people, and that her popularity extends far beyond Bavaria and the CSU party. Furthermore, she praised Aigner’s qualities, describing her as “competent, intelligent, and politically experienced at all levels.” In her view, Aigner possesses the necessary “character and format,” handles situations with discretion, and stands for the “values of the Union”-qualities that would benefit the country during these challenging times.

The endorsement comes as Merz announced on Monday that the Union would be proposing a female candidate for the presidency. Ilse Aigner has already been cited for some time as a potential successor to Steinmeier.
