Gysi Calls for Vanessa Emde’s Exclusion from Left: Anti-Semitism, ‘Red Lines’ and Political Shifts

The Left Party MP and former Berlin economic senator, Gregor Gysi, expressed his hope that Berlin MP Vanessa Emde could be expelled from the party faction. Speaking on a Paul Ronzheimer podcast, Gysi stated that the party colleague should be removed.

Gysi responded sharply when asked about Emde questioning Israel’s right to exist as a state and calling for the killing of Israeli soldiers. He declared that such views are “antisemitic” and, above all, completely inadmissible for his party. Gysi made it clear that the right of Israel to exist is a firm line for him. He stressed the necessity of setting “red lines” that absolutely must not be crossed.

Regarding internal party issues, Gysi also mentioned that there remain unresolved questions concerning the contacts of Left Party MP Ferat Koçak with Remmo. While he admitted that not everything was clear to him, he stated that the situation has been “largely” clarified, noting that Koçak has committed an error. Gysi hinted at potential repercussions, explaining that while “a few more open questions” still need sorting, a statement will then be issued. He added that if “consequences must be drawn,” they will be.

Looking toward the long term, Gysi also found a red-green-red coalition at the federal level to be a possibility. He suggested that such a union would be a “fantastic prospect compared to participation by the AfD.” When questioned about whether this could materialize, he replied that it is “entirely possible.” Although he previously viewed almost everything as being against such a coalition, Gysi stated that “it can happen.”
