Luigi Pantisano, the leader of the Left party, has strongly criticized the fuel price cap planned by Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche (CDU). Pantisano told the “Rheinische Post” that rather than protecting citizens from high gasoline and diesel prices, Katherina Reiche seems primarily concerned with ensuring the profitability of the oil corporations. He argues that the proposed cap effectively only secures the profits of corporations, describing it as, at best, a “holey price cap” for working people who rely on their car. According to Reiche’s draft proposal, the price cap will only take effect if diesel or gasoline price increases rise by more than five percentage points above the average price increase of the rest of the EU countries during three consecutive weeks compared to the previous week.
