Berliner Linke Demands Mandate Resignation from Neukölln MP Vanessa Emde Over Political Statements

The Berlin Left party is distancing itself from the Neukölln representative Vanessa Emde of the Left. According to the “Tagesspiegel”, the state executive committee intends to call upon Emde by late Friday afternoon to resign her mandate. This action is reportedly justified by violations of the mandate agreement, including failing to adhere to the party and electoral programs.

Representatives from the SPD and the Greens had made Emde’s exclusion a condition for forming a coalition government. Additionally, Katalin Gennburg and Gregor Gysi are also calling for her removal. Nevertheless, Emde’s supporters argue that the party leadership is backing down.

Internally within the Left party, it is not expected that Emde will comply with this request. If she refuses to respond, the parliamentary group could introduce a motion for her expulsion on Tuesday. Passing this motion would require a two-thirds majority of the faction, which observers believe is likely to be achieved.

Emde is facing criticism because, according to reports, she stated in May 2026 that states have no right to existence, while people have a right to exist. This statement is frequently interpreted as questioning the existence of Israel. Furthermore, she allegedly called for solidarity with the activist Ibrahim Ibrahim. Security authorities indicate that this individual is associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, an organization designated as a terror organization by both the U.S. and the EU.
