Pistorius Slams Berlin Coalition with Left Party, Citing Security Concerns and Opposition to Bundeswehr

Boris Pistorius, the Federal Minister of Defense (SPD), has intensified his critique regarding the planned government in Berlin, which is set to include the Left Party, the SPD, and the Greens. Speaking to the media group Funke, Pistorius stated that he finds a such a coalition inconceivable due to numerous unresolved questions and unacceptable political positions within the Left Party.

While he does not want to raise a general suspicion, Pistorius noted that there are certainly vigorous opponents of the Bundeswehr (Federal Armed Forces) and the security authorities-specifically the police and the constitutional protection agencies-among the members of The Left in Berlin. He highlighted the potential for extreme concerns, mentioning that in certain cases, there is a “suspicious closeness to members of criminal clans and to adherents of radical Hamas supporters.” Pistorius suggested that these are serious issues that need to be addressed.

He also warned that if the SPD were to approve such a coalition, it would lead to intense debates within the party. However, he concluded that the Berlin SPD state association would ultimately make the decision based on a member vote. Pistorius was aware that many voices within the Berlin SPD were currently voicing significant discomfort.
