Germany Seeks Further Talks on Detained Citizen

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul of the CDU has announced renewed talks with the Hungarian government concerning the detention of Maja T. in Hungary.

Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Wadephul stated that German representatives will be visiting Hungary next week to address the situation. The immediate focus, he explained, is to secure improvements in the conditions of her detention. “Our efforts in this matter are continuing intensively” Wadephul affirmed.

Despite these ongoing efforts, Hungary has consistently reiterated its commitment to pursuing its own criminal proceedings. Minister Wadephul acknowledged that Maja T. faces “very serious allegations” adding that a criminal prosecution would likely be pursued even in Germany.

Maja T., originating from Jena, is accused of assault during protests against right-wing extremism in Hungary. While the Federal Constitutional Court had declared her extradition to Hungary inadmissible, local authorities in the state of Saxony did not await this ruling before initiating proceedings.
