The European Union is preparing retaliatory measures in response to the United States’ announced tariffs on EU imports. Following President Donald Trump’s declaration of a 30% tariff set to take effect on August 1st, EU trade ministers have been discussing potential counter-tariffs targeting US imports valued at €72 billion.
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič reported on Monday that these actions are being considered and emphasized the potential impact of the US tariffs on transatlantic trade relations, which currently facilitate daily exchanges worth approximately €4.4 billion.
Šefčovič expressed regret that negotiations, which he believed were nearing a successful conclusion, have been abruptly halted by the White House’s announcement. The EU had been aiming for a compromise involving a 10% tariff. As a direct response to the declared measures, the EU has postponed planned counter-measures on US goods, previously slated for implementation, to coincide with the August 1st date.
