EU Set to Target US Industries with Counter Tariffs

The European Commission is preparing a detailed list of potential tariffs targeting US imports should ongoing trade negotiations fail to reach an agreement by the end of July. According to a 206-page overview from the EU Trade Committee, seen by “Focus” magazine, the proposed measures could affect US imports valued at approximately €65.7 billion.

The potential tariffs are primarily aimed at industrial goods, with a significant impact expected on the aerospace sector. Imports of aircraft, engines, tires and landing gear, totaling nearly €11 billion, are identified as particularly vulnerable. The EU is also focusing on the machinery sector (€9.4 billion) and the US automotive industry (€8 billion).

Beyond industrial goods, the scope of potential measures extends to agricultural imports. This includes fresh produce, alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine and whiskey and processed food products like ketchup and sauces. While representing a smaller volume – approximately €6.3 billion – these goods are also included in the potential retaliatory measures.

The Commission’s detailed list signals a preparedness to take action should trade discussions prove unsuccessful, reflecting a willingness to defend European interests.
