Germany Resumes Deportation Flights to Afghanistan

A deportation flight departed Germany for Afghanistan Friday morning, marking the first such operation in nearly a year.

According to Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), the flight took off from Leipzig/Halle airport around 8:30 AM local time, heading towards Kabul. The aircraft carried 81 individuals, described by officials as “serious and very serious offenders.

The last deportation of Afghan offenders occurred at the end of August last year, also from Leipzig/Halle airport. At that time, 28 men were repatriated with the assistance of Qatar, which has previously played a mediating role between Western nations and the Taliban regime.

Deportations to Afghanistan remain a contentious issue, raising concerns about potential human rights violations and the lack of guarantees for fair legal proceedings within the country. The Taliban regime, currently governing Afghanistan, is not formally recognized by the Federal Republic of Germany or most other nations.
