Germany Faces Backlash Over Syria Deportation Talk

A former German government commissioner for human rights, Luise Amtsberg, has cautioned against discussions regarding deportations to Syria. Addressing the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” network, Amtsberg stated that considering such actions is “wholly inappropriate” particularly given the current situation where Syrian minority groups are again struggling for their survival.

The contemplation of deportations is generating disappointment and uncertainty within the Syrian diaspora, she added. Amtsberg, now serving as a foreign policy expert for the Green Party faction, urged Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to exert greater effort to prevent further escalation in Syria. She emphasized the necessity of increasing pressure on the Syrian transitional government.

Amtsberg underscored that the protection of minority groups and the investigation of atrocities should be prioritized, ensuring accountability for those responsible. She asserted that truth-seeking and reconciliation are essential first steps toward establishing an inclusive state, a process in which Germany can play a significant role.
