A recent analysis released Tuesday by the Statistical Federal Office (Destatis) reveals a noticeable increase in the cost of several essential school supplies in Germany. While consumer prices generally rose by 2.0% between June 2024 and June 2025, the price of textbooks and schoolbooks experienced a more significant increase, rising by 3.8% during the same period.
The upward trend in costs isn’t uniform across all school-related expenses. Prices for paper-based products, including notebooks and drawing pads, saw a considerably smaller increase, rising negligibly at 0.3% compared to the previous year.
Consumers also faced slightly higher costs for other writing and drawing materials. Items such as fountain pens, pencils and art sets registered a price increase of 1.7% in June 2025, compared to June 2024. The data highlights a varied impact of inflation on goods typically used by students and educators.
