AfD Chief Alice Weidel Critiques Party Platform’s Anti-NonTraditional Family Stance

Alice Weidel, chairwoman of the AfD party, has criticized certain phrases within the Saturday-Anhalt regional branch’s election program that appear to oppose non-traditional family structures. Speaking to RTL and ntv broadcasters, she stated, “I cannot agree with that,” emphasizing her commitment to a more socially liberal outlook, adding: “I live it. I truly live it.” She suggested they ought to leave such dichotomies in the past entirely.

The regional party’s platform includes language asserting that children only originate from the union of a man and a woman, stating that a “stable family consisting of mother, father, and children” is “provenly the best prerequisite for healthy child development.” Furthermore, it suggests that rising abortion rates and declining birth numbers are linked to the more aggressive promotion of “sexual deviations and non-reproductive lifestyles,” while also referencing phrases about “non-standard gender identities” or “deviant sexual preferences.”

Weidel argued that “we now live in a completely different reality.” She asserted that same-sex relationships should be treated equally. While acknowledging that one can advocate for the “traditional family” as a desired societal ideal-a view she called “not contradictory”-she stressed that other forms of life must also be recognized as equally valid, particularly concerning tax and inheritance rights. Adding that nothing should change in this regard or ever should, she concluded her remarks.
