Following the clear electoral victory of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, top candidate Ulrich Siegmund believes this result signals a shift toward Berlin. Speaking immediately after the 6 PM projections televised by ARD, Siegmund characterized Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) as a “very good campaigner” for the AfD, adding that every day Merz remained in the Chancellery was “one too many.”
Regarding his own potential to become Minister President, Siegmund refused to commit, stating that his hand remained open to other democratic parties. However, he stressed that a “fundamental political turnaround” is necessary. According to ARD and ZDF’s projections, the AfD likely falls just short of an independent majority. Nevertheless, collaboration with the BSW is considered a potential possibility, provided the BSW manages to cross the 5% electoral threshold.
