Airline Ticket Prices Poised for Further Increases Despite Planned Tax Cuts, Warns German Politician

According to Anja Karliczek, chair of the Bundestag’s Tourism Committee and a CDU member, the planned reduction of the aviation tax starting July 1st will fail to compensate for the current surge in flight ticket prices caused by the energy crisis. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Monday, Karliczek stated that the travel industry is currently experiencing difficult times, and ticket prices are expected to continue climbing, warning that people should not be misled.

While the implemented tax reduction only provides a preliminary contribution-intended to prevent German airports and airlines from falling further behind foreign competition-Karliczek stressed that Germany requires attractive hubs to remain competitive, particularly for incoming tourists. Regarding the high costs of kerosene, she argued that these prices do not constitute a market distortion against German airports when compared to national location costs. Instead, she characterized it as a pure price phenomenon that all airlines must simply factor into their calculations.
