Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner of the CDU, has accused the Left Party of growing radicalization. This criticism follows a controversial statement made by the new leader of the Left Party, Luigi Pantisano. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday, Wegner stated that Pantisano’s remarks are “symptomatic of a Left Party that has become increasingly radicalized over the years and is moving further and further away from democratic discourse.”
Wegner also asserted that anyone who equates the CDU with the AfD is outside the boundaries of a serious political debate. He further criticized the party, saying it reflects a “state” where they allegedly tolerate “antisemites and police-haters” within their ranks.
The Mayor also urged the SPD and the Greens to distance themselves from the Left. He suggested they need to examine the position of their “own firewall against political extremism.”
The controversy stems from Pantisano’s recent comments in the “Bild” newspaper, where he sharply attacked the CDU, claiming, “Ultimately, there is no difference between the CDU doing fascist politics, the AfD, or the fascists themselves.”
