Ines Schwerdtner, the chairwoman of the Left party, maintains that expropriations are a requirement if that party participates in a Berlin government. Speaking to the “Stern” podcast, “5-Minuten-Talk,” she stated clearly that the Berliner Linke would be socialized within the government structure, a conviction she views as definitive.
The chief of the Left party elaborated that they must pull some apartments away from market logic to genuinely reduce, or at least stabilize, rental prices over the long term. She noted that this view is shared by many Social Democrats, turning the policy into what she characterized as an ultra-social democratic initiative in relation to a potential coalition partner.
When addressing the stance of SPD top candidate Steffen Krach-who stated his party would not support expropriations-Schwerdtner responded by saying: “If I were in the SPD’s position, I would be a little more humble.”
Furthermore, Schwerdtner distanced herself once again from remarks made earlier by her co-chair, Luigi Pantisano, who in June had claimed there was currently no difference between the policies of the CDU and the AfD. “That was a mistake, and he confessed it,” she stated, adding that he had apologized for his comments, which she suggested even political rivals might acknowledge.
The next local election for the Berlin House of Representatives is scheduled for September 20.
