In response to internal debates within the Greens, party chair Franziska Brantner has advocated for a pragmatic approach, calling on the party base to accept difficult concessions should the Greens participate in a future government. Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”, she emphasized that taking action requires pragmatically utilizing governmental responsibility to introduce real changes, even if this necessitates agreeing to “difficult compromises” for some members.
Brantner presented the Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, Cem Özdemir, as the ideal model for this shift. She stated that Özdemir successfully embodies a brand of “core-green politics with the courage for change,” and this example must guide the entire party if it wishes to be closer to the people and effectively break through political roadblocks. According to the party chair, the focus must be on solving concrete problems rather than merely serving “old clichés”-a task that requires the cooperation of the entire Greens party.
The party chair has faced significant criticism in recent weeks, particularly from the youth wing of her own party. This scrutiny intensified after she addressed a gathering of a new network of young Greens members, where she urged the party to embrace “more openness.”
