Following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, the BSW has indicated an openness to discussions with the AfD if they manage to enter the parliament. BSW top candidate Claudia Wittig stated during the ARD election night that they would be willing to implement “specific projects that are good for the state” even with the AfD. Although the BSW had made similar remarks during the campaign, Wittig clarified that while she would not vote for AfD top candidate Ulrich Siegmund as Minister-President, she viewed the incumbent Sven Schulze (CDU) as an even less viable option.
Meanwhile, AfD leader Alice Weidel reinforced the party’s stance that they would be open to talking with “any sensible party,” provided that they could reach consensus on substantive policy issues. Weidel maintained that this alignment reflects the mandate of the voters.
Recent projections still leave uncertainty about whether the BSW will make it into the parliament. The BSW stands at 5.0 percent according to Infratest for ARD, and 4.8 percent according to Research Group Wahlen for ZDF. The entry of the BSW could ultimately be the determining factor in forming a government led by the AfD.
The AfD, on average, garnered 44.3 percent, narrowly missing an absolute majority. The CDU followed with 18.5 percent, ahead of the Left Party with 9.3 percent, the Greens with 8.8 percent, and the SPD with 8.5 percent. The FDP failed to cross the threshold, receiving only 2.3 percent of the vote, while the Others category achieved 3.5 percent.
