The BSW parliamentary group leadership in Saxony-Anhalt has sharply criticized the current Minister-President, Sven Schulze (CDU), for his plan to prevent his potential successor, Ulrich Siegmund (AfD), from chairing the Conference of Prime Ministers (MPK).
BSW state parliament faction leader Thomas Schulze and vice-faction leader Claudia Wittig told “Die Welt”, stating, “Sven Schulze lost the election and is now, apparently, trying to quickly deny his successor opportunities for shaping policy.” They labeled the attempt to withdraw Saxony-Anhalt from the MPK chairmanship specifically at this time as “politically indecent” and an indication of a “questionable understanding of democracy.” They argued that anyone who respects the will of the voters should not leave a “scorched earth” for their successor.
The BSW called on the CDU politician to reconsider his decision and create the conditions necessary for Saxony-Anhalt to take over the MPK presidency as originally planned. Schulze and Wittig explained that this opportunity would allow the state to advocate for its interests at the federal level. They demanded that Schulze set aside personal feelings and finally act in the interest of the state, emphasizing that Saxony-Anhalt must not lose its influence in federal politics just because the CDU was dissatisfied with the election results.
