The Bundestag plans to implement its own AI chatbot for members of parliament and administrative staff later this year, provided all preparations proceed as scheduled. Andrea Lindholz, Deputy President of the Bundestag (CSU), informed the “Rheinische Post” on Wednesday that this introduction is currently scheduled before the end of the year.
Lindholz clarified that the chatbot is intended as a supporting tool designed to enable faster and more accurate work in various areas, explicitly stating it is not meant to replace human labor. She noted that it could alleviate workload in tasks such as transcribing spoken words, drafting written papers, or preparing speeches.
Furthermore, the institute hopes that providing its own official AI tool will increase the safety surrounding the use of artificial intelligence within the Bundestag. Although parliamentarians are already free to utilize external AI services, Lindholz emphasized that the official chatbot aims to foster a more conscious, critical, and secure approach to AI usage. “We are not creating a new danger with our chatbot; rather, we are trying to manage the use of AI more thoughtfully and safely,” she stressed, adding that this endeavor will help curb the existing, widely prevalent ‘shadow AI.’ The initial application of this tool is planned for a period of twelve months.
The project is designed so that every member of parliament, as well as all staff members, could receive their own dedicated access. Regarding potential enthusiasm for the service, Lindholz stated, “We will see what kind of reception the offer receives. I do not want to force anyone; we are only creating the possibility.” Concerning security concerns, she assured that the “security level has been intentionally set as high as possible.” As Deputy President, Lindholz also chairs the Committee of the Elder Council for Information Technology and Digitalization, which is handling the introduction of the AI chatbot for the institution.
