Steffen Bilger, the parliamentary manager of the Union faction in the Bundestag, is reportedly poised to become the new Federal Transport Minister. This information, sourced from government circles by the publication “Bild,” suggests that Bilger would succeed Patrick Schnieder, who is planning to ask Chancellor Friedrich Merz to dismiss him.
Bilger is from Baden-Württemberg and has prior experience in transport policy, having served on the Parliamentary Transport Committee from 2009 to 2018, and subsequently acting as Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport until 2021.
According to “Bild,” Merz contacted Bilger on Saturday to ask if he would be willing to take over the ministry, and Bilger accepted the offer. Earlier, on Friday morning, Schnieder announced via an SMS to Bundestag representatives that Merz had informed him on Thursday that he would be dismissed. However, this dismissal ultimately did not materialize.
