Outer affairs politician Peter Beyer (CDU) advised caution regarding the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that he plans to sign a deal with Iran this Sunday. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he noted that similar announcements have frequently failed in the past.
Beyer highlighted the inconsistent messaging coming from Washington, Tehran, and the mediator Pakistan, stating that reliability is far from guaranteed at this point. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that a fundamental framework agreement between the U.S. and Iran could serve as an initial step away from escalation, especially following weeks of intense violence. Furthermore, he pointed out that a potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would ease energy markets, directly benefiting the German economy.
However, the Member of the Bundestag also stressed that the inclusion of Israel in any such agreement would be crucial. According to Beyer, genuine peace in the region would remain merely a talking point unless Iran’s nuclear and missile programs were effectively stopped and the regime ceased its aggression not only against its own population but also against neighboring states, particularly Israel.
