Civil Society Report Declares AfD Unconstitutional, Challenges Ban Appeal Chances

A legal opinion published by a civil rights organization concludes that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is unconstitutional. Dana-Sophia Valentiner of the Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (GFF), announcing the report during a press conference on Thursday, stated that the argument that a ban application would fail is “no longer justifiable” given this new assessment.

The report successfully demonstrates the party’s “hostility toward democracy.” However, the authors found it difficult to prove that the AfD intended to systematically “persecute” its political opponents. The researchers relied exclusively on publicly available sources and stated that their work was strictly scientifically grounded, including the evaluation of numerous sources found on social media platforms. Furthermore, the GFF’s assessment is significantly more comprehensive than the prior document created by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

The Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte funded this report entirely through donations, which amounted to 900,000 euros raised from more than 18,000 supporters.
