Coalition Leader Presses for Unity and Mandatory Reforms to Boost Economy

Just before the intensive strategy meeting of the extended party leadership committees of the Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD) in Münster, Union Parliamentary Group Chairman Thorsten Frei (CDU) called for the coalition to maintain unity. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Frei emphasized that the agreed-upon reform initiatives clearly demonstrate that economic growth and employment are central priorities. He stated that the pension reform offers the opportunity for a genuine paradigm shift. At the same time, the Parliamentary Group Chairman demanded increased flexibility in the labor market and a reduction in bureaucracy. According to Frei, everyone must understand that these reforms are essential for the economy to regain strength. The CDU politician stressed that “now we must keep our course and explain to the people why we are taking this path.” He added that the meeting was a crucial instance to “align ourselves on this direction for the coming months.”
