The Left Party in Saxony-Anhalt has indicated openness toward cooperation with the CDU following the state election. According to top candidate and party leader Eva von Angern, a closer collaboration would be possible if it were necessary for the state of Saxony-Anhalt, stating, “I rule out nothing.”
However, she has made clear prerequisites for such a partnership. One condition is that the current government must be voted out. Von Angern stressed that no one should expect to continue implementing the existing policies that led the state to its current situation, regardless of new partners.
Von Angern also addressed the scenario where the Christian Democrats might require the Left Party’s approval for CDU candidate Sven Schulze in a runoff election without prior consultation. She issued a strong warning about this possibility, declaring, “I can only warn against that. It will go wrong,” emphasizing, “We are an independent party; our approval is not given without demanding something.”
Her party intends to maintain an opposition campaign against the current state and federal governments and views itself as a constructive opposition moving forward. She also noted that there are individuals within the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt whom she does not wish to speak with or collaborate with.
Von Angern concluded by saying the ball is now in the Union’s court. She urged the CDU to stop hesitating and make a transparent decision about its stance toward The Left Party. Otherwise, Schulze risks beginning the new legislative period with broken campaign promises, as he might ultimately need to negotiate with them. She added that such an outcome would damage credibility and exacerbate the crisis in democracy.
