Following their electoral win in Berlin, the CSU is demanding the swift implementation of the approach agreed upon in the Coalition Committee to oppose the socialization of large privately owned rental properties. CSU General Secretary Martin Huber told newspapers from the Funke Media Group that the Left party’s plans for expropriation are “driving the housing market to ruin and come with horrendous costs.”
Huber added that the Left’s proposals constitute a “socialist suicide mission,” arguing that such a plan would prevent the creation of any new housing units and compromise “necessary private investments.” He asserted that the decision made in the Coalition Committee-to prohibit property takeovers via federal law-must now be implemented “as quickly as possible.”
The Left party announced after its victory that it intends to maintain its plans for socializing large housing companies. Leading candidate Elif Eralp stated on Monday that it is clear to her that socialization “must also be carried out” in a future state government.
The Coalition Committee, comprising the Union and the SPD, tasked the federal government in early July with examining the legal options available to counter socializations at the state level and implementing the resulting regulations. However, the federal government has not yet provided a concrete timeline for a draft law, confirming that internal discussions are still underway.
