CSU Politician Slams Organ Donor Opt-Out Rule as “Ethically Wrong”

Stephan Pilsinger, a CSU politician and vice chairman of the Health Committee, has stated clearly his opposition to potentially introducing an opt-out solution for organ donation. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he argued that legally designating individuals as donors-particularly those who may not have seriously considered this sensitive issue-is ethically wrong. Pilsinger further noted that introducing an opt-out system would not be ethically sound, citing studies that failed to show any significant increase in organ donations.

Instead of changing the system through mandatory consent, Pilsinger emphasized that improvements should target the existing structures and better public education. According to the CSU politician, organ donation must remain a conscious and voluntary act, and it should never become a mandatory contribution. The Health Committee in the Bundestag is currently scheduled to discuss a possible reform of organ donation practices this Wednesday.
