Despite reaching the age limit of 35 in the autumn, which is the requirement for membership in the Young Union, its federal chairman, Johannes Winkel, appears keen to remain at the helm for two more years. According to reports cited by the “Tagesspiegel” specifically drawing from circles within the CDU and CSU youth organizations, Winkel will run for re-election at the upcoming Deutschlandtag. This event is scheduled for “early October” placing it just weeks before Winkel’s birthday. State regulations for the Young Union stipulate that the membership of office holders remains valid until they formally resign, meaning their tenure would customarily conclude in 2028. Winkel, who publicly criticized the pension policy last year and more recently the “relief package” implemented by the coalition government led by Federal Minister Friedrich Merz, is expected to secure a large majority. Sources within the party’s youth wing told the “Tagesspiegel” that Winkel enjoys significant support for his re-election within the Young Union, its various committees, the Young Group in the Bundestag, and beyond, adding that “he is doing a superb job”.
